Rooms

The Gilchrist Room The Gilchrist Room

Overlooking the town green with views of the band shell and Bethany Public Library, queen-sized bed and a private bath with jacuzzi tub. Also has a small television.

The Ladd Room The Ladd Room

A sloping ceiling trails down to two eyebrow windows that overlook the lush backyard. It offers a king-sized bed and a private bath.

The Roosa Room The Roosa Room

With a view of our heritage gardens, this serene room offers a comfortable queen sized brass bed. Airy and tranquil with the first morning light. Shared bathroom across the hall.

The Sitgrave Room The Sitgrave House

Built around 1805, and separate from the main house, this is perfect when you are looking for comfort, and a bit more privacy. A former residence and at one time, an apothecary office for Dr. Roosa, the Sitgrave House features three functioning brick fireplaces that allow you to cozy up in the living room, kitchen, and bedroom. (There is also more modern heat for the cooler months!)

On the main floor you'll find the living room, and everything you need to whip up a snack or simple meal - but of course, we hope you'll join us for breakfast! Up the curvy staircase you'll find a large bedroom with a king-sized bed, comfortable seating and a private bath. The Sitgrave House can sleep 3 and is sometimes affectionately referred to as "The Little House."

Natural Health

Visit the website of Nathaniel Whitmore herbalist and shiatsu massage therapist. He leads many nature walks, pointing out the edible plants of the region, as well as those used for medicinal purposes. Nathaniel's first herbal teacher, Taterbug, was a 'Sang digger and 'shiner who taught Nathaniel about wild edible and medicinal plants. Currently, Nathaniel uses organic grain alcohol to make herbal tinctures. He also makes cough syrups, salves, and other herbal preparations, and intends to offer a line of products to the public later this year.

The Stourbridge Rail Excursion

Honesdale is the birthplace of the American railroad and the small brick building which now houses the Wayne County Historical Society was once the D&H Canal's company office. On August 8, 1829, the Delaware & Hudson operated the first commercial locomotive on rails in the western hemisphere. That locomotive left from this spot, ran three miles to Seelyville and returned. You can take excursions of different lengths, either just to Hawley, or all the way to Lackawaxen, Pike County. The schedule and more information found at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.

There are swimming spots hidden along the Delaware River, and Honesdale has a public pool, Lake Wallenpaupack also has a lovely public beach.

The Story

About The Bed & Breakfast

Drawing of the Bed and Breakfast Circa 1815 the house now known as The Roosa House was built by Eliphalet Kellogg as a log cabin. (You can still see remnants of the log cabin today.) Sometime during the later 1800’s Dr. Isaac Roosa enlarged and remodeled it. The home features traditional colonial style with wide wooden floorboards, high ceilings, crown molding, and all the details you love to see in an historic home.

As one of Bethany’s original homes, it sits proudly on the Town Green, which held the Court House and “the fireproof building” which is now the Bethany Library. The Court House was moved across the street, and served as the general store.

This private home was established as the E. Kellogg Bed & Breakfast in 2006.

The Sitgrave House, the “little house” was built circa 1805 by Samual Sitgrave, who resided in Bethany for only a short time. The Sitgrave house was given as a marriage portion to Dr. Roosa for his use as an apothecary.

About Your Hostess

Photo of Kathy Schloesser, owner of E. Kellogg Bed and Breakfast Known for her friendly and genuine hospitality, Kathy is here to make your stay relaxing and comfortable. A resident of Bethany for over 30 years, Kathy's knowledge of activities, restaurants, and destinations can help you make the most out of your time here.

About E. Kellogg

Photo of Eliphalet Kellogg Born in 1740 in Brookfield, Connecticut, Eliphalet Kellogg served as a member of the first New Hampshire Regiment during the Revolutionary War before settling in Wayne County with his family in 1815. Mr. Kellogg was involved in settling Wayne County and held many elected offices. He first moved into the Little House as construction on the main house began. When completed, the family moved into the main house. Years later, his daughter married Dr. Isaac Roosa and her father gave him “The Sitgrave House” as her marriage portion. Dr. Roosa used it as his apothecary. The house stayed in the family until sold by decendants to Mrs. Louise Pierpont Ladd.

Photo of Louise Eckhart Louise Eckart grew up spending the summers in the Bethany area. Her family was from New Yrok City. She later married Clifford Pierpont Ladd and they summered in the Sitgrave House for many years and later acquired the larger house. In the early 50's she added indoor plumbing and heating to the Roosa house to be able to utilize it year round. Mrs. Ladd was an avid New York Yankees fan and listened to all the games on her transitor radio. I bed she'd love to travel to Montage to see the Yankees play in person!
